And today, thanks to meticulous restoration, not only is it a reliable and exceptionally comfy place to spend a sightseeing summer, it's also an authentic piece of Americana that'll be welcomed at virtually any car show in any town. FIRST AND FOREMOST Check the car's body-matched engine bay and you'll find 496 cubic inches of stroked Chevy big block that easily creates over 500 horsepower! At that top of that monochromatic mill, a K&N X-Stream air cleaner shrouds a big Quick Fuel carburetor. Wired to braided lines and a quality Marshall gauge, that spry carb dumps a crisp mixture of fossils and oxygen in to an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake. At the back of that aluminum plane, an MSD Pro-Billet distributor sequences MSD 6AL ignition between an MSD Blaster 2 coil and loomed MSD Super Conductor.

Above those cables, hot aluminum heads float billet breathers on milled Chevrolet valve covers. At the front of the block, Billet Specialties Tru Trac serpentine components spin an Edelbrock water pump between a polished AC compressor, a polished Powermaster alternator and modern power steering. At the front of those ancillaries, a polished BTR radiator makes excellent use of two electric puller fans. And polished brake components join items like a coated fuel pump, polished fluid reservoirs, a Holley throttle bracket and a quality Lokar linkage to detail serious performance with serious substance.

PERFORMANCE MEETS PERSONALITY The beneficiary of a body-off restoration that was completed in late 2012, this Chevelle is a sharp weekend cruiser that currently presents much better than original factory fodder. During the car's precise reboot, solid sheetmetal was completely striped of its dull, original pigment. With that shell removed, and its foundation massaged into great alignment, bright yellow base was sealed in mirror-like clear. And today, one close look at our high-resolution photos reveals a handsome payoff in the form of one slick Chevrolet muscle car! As with any well-done tribute, trim and ornamentation appears factory accurate. At the front of this coupe's long body, a familiar Super Sport grille hangs a prominent SS 396 emblem between clear headlights and a bright bumper that's finished with small parking lamps. Behind that grille, a stainless-trimmed Super Sport hood centers streamlined louvers in front of dark-tint glass that's caged in straight frames, polished rails and mirrored wipers. At the sides of that hood, ornate fender emblems and quarter-mounted Super Sport scripts hint at the true nature of the big block's personality, while tasteful door handles and a duo of bowtie mirrors perfectly complement slim wheel lips and grooved Super Sport rockers. And out back, a color-keyed valance hangs a second prominent SS 396 emblem between clean taillights and a second bright bumper that's finished with small reverse lamps.

LONG AND LOW Every great automotive profile is founded on an equally great stance. Not surprisingly, this Chevelle rolls on a lowered factory suspension that's been upgraded with heavy duty Hotchkis sway bars. Behind the impressive big block, a smooth 700R4 4-speed shuffles power to a familiar 12-bolt axle. Modern power steering is augmented with four power-assisted Master Power calipers, which clamp a quartet of drilled, slotted and vented discs. Coated Hooker Competition headers dump spent gases into large, Mandrel-bent exhaust pipes, which center polished Magnaflow mufflers between an X-shaped crossover and polished stainless tips. At the corners of the car, polished American Racing Torq Thrust IIs spin 225/45ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 275/30ZR20 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs. And the car's solid floors stretch weather-resistant undercoating between a deep-sump oil pan and a fresh stainless fuel tank.

STYLE MEETS COMFORT Peer through this Chevy's tinted windows and you'll find a clean Black interior that's both attractive and timeless. In the middle of that cockpit, taut vinyl buckets are in excellent shape, showing virtually no signs of wear. In front of those seats, a lightly customized dash hangs rebuilt factory gauges between a billet accelerator pedal, Custom Autosound audio and sedate Auto Gage accessory gauges. At the base of that dash, Chevrolet-themed floor mats frame a factory console, which anchors a stylish factory shifter behind an Equus Pro Tach. Opposite that console, Polk Audio kick speakers lead factory side panels. In front of the driver, a sporty Grant steering wheel laps a tilting Ididit column. And behind the passengers, Polk Audio deck speakers shade a restored trunk that's complete with the car's relocated battery.
